Shiny 4x4 - ARAC Rock Garden Working Bee

Hi everyone

GWRC have given ARAC approval to undertake repairs to the washout on the Rock Garden track. This washout is approximately 200 metres up from Martins Creek and whilst usable by mountain bikers and motor bikes has been inaccessible to 4wd’s for some considerable time.

The time is long overdue to get this thru route reopened.

Project is being managed by Stu Barton and the date set for this is Sunday 22nd September.

The project involves laying a culvert in the base and then cutting down the level of the track back into the original bank. Spoil will be placed into the bottom of the track to cover over the culvert. Work is being done manually, although we will have a couple of jack hammers on site to help break up the rock.

Tools needed will be picks, shovels, rakes, crowbars. A few wheelbarrows would also be useful.

Hi Vis gear will not be necessary, but good boots or strong shoes would help.

If you or any of your club members wish to help out then you are most welcome. (We have identifed a few other areas of the track which can be tidied up if we have lots of resources.) It is an all day job so bring your lunch.

Team A will be led in by Stuart from Perhams Road gate, Maungutukutuku Valley. Be at the gate by 9am. We will be leaving on time and late comers wont be able to get thru the gate.

Team B will be led by Marcus Steeneken from Cooks Road gate. Be at the gate by 9am.

Project will proceed on this date unless we have really atrocious weather.
